What is eCall?

eCall (Emergency Call System) is a European-mandated safety feature that automatically contacts emergency services (112) in the event of a serious accident.

  • Transfers a Minimum Set of Data (MSD) — including vehicle location, time, direction, and crash data — to the nearest Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP).

  • Supports manual SOS calls (MEC) and automatic crash notifications (ACN).

  • Reduces response time by up to 50% in rural areas and 40% in cities, saving lives every day

Types of eCall Systems

Legal SOS (EU eCall)

Uses 2G/3G networks to transmit the MSD over the voice channel via an in-band modem — the mandatory system across the EU since 2018

Private SOS

Operates over 4G (LTE) / 5G (NR) networks, sending the MSD through SIP INVITE and SMS to a Trusted Service Provider (TSP) such as Bosch

Next-Generation eCall

Future-proof, IMS-based eCall over 4G/5G, replacing 2G/3G. Supports voice, data, and IP connectivity for faster emergency communications
